Something about gurus in general...

Dattatreya is historically, the first guru. known for his qualities of love and wisdom. His three heads represent the Hindu trinity, a blending of Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiva. The goodness and spiritual power of the guru can be felt in their loving acts--teaching, healing, prophecy, and offerring blessings. The Guru is honored as spiritual guide for the community, presiding at weddings and at weekly temple services. The role of counselor, advisor, and healer affords a most respected position within the community. This respect attracts many followers who honor them with prayers and blessings. Gifts, including money, land, even entire personal fortunes have been donated.

Most Gurus don't choose their path. Instead, it's revealed to them through visions and knowledge, gained from inner meditations or it may simply be discovered by the local elders. Gurus are known for their teachings, their great generosity, and their incredible knowledge.

Several other gurus...

The guru, Devoraha Baba, is known for his tremendous age. Some say that he is over 200 years old and has attended over 15 Kumba Mela festivals. His old age can be attributed to his life spent practicing a specialized form of Prana Yoga which transforms breath into life energy. People are drawn to see this man whose vitality and well-being contrasts with his old and wrinkled body. His calm poise reflects the internal peace from lifetimes of contemplation, which is felt by the thousands of devotees. They have come in throngs to sit on the far bank and worship. This guru is very unusual. Amongst all the gurus in India, the government recognizes the authenticity of only three teachers as gurus. Devoraha Baba is one such guru, and has been consulted personally by Rajiv Gandhi. His reputation is legendary in many corners of India. (since the 1989 mela, he has passed out of his body...)

Tat Baba has a small ashram in the Himalayas. Wearing only clothes made of rough cloth, his voluntary simplicity reflects a great understanding. "Must look inside for bliss. Can't be found anywhere else."

Some gurus, like Pilot Baba, are named for their past experiences. This guru was formerly a flyer. A highly educated man, Pilot Baba is known for his contemporary perspective on enlightenment and Mela politics. His ideas and efforts reflect an energetic and active approach to the problems of this world. To show his generosity and openness, Pilot Baba has extended an open invitation to westerners wishing to stay with him.

Vedavyasananda heads the Gita Prachar ashram, a medium sized ashram in Rishikesh, with several hundred followers. Some are traditional monks and are there to devote their lives to the practice of yoga and meditation. Others, families and individuals, practice in a more social context observing holidays and occasions. They have come to the Kumbha Mela as a special adventure, and to share in ashram life for a short but joyous time. For some, the ashram becomes more of a family. Young orphaned boys are sometimes invited in and raised in a spiritual environment to become Brahman monks. His contemporary perspective adds a touch of humor to his teachings of the great scriptures.
